I want to try my hand at creating some music, has anyone got some recommendations for software aimed at beginners (and doesnt require external hardware eg. MIDI keyboards etc.)?

I've used Dance Ejay 1 & 3 in the past but I want something with a bit more to it and not just aimed at certain styles.

well. I think reason is a bit more dificult to process, but not hard...
I may be wrong, 'cuz I used fruityloops from the version 1 to 6, and I think I know 78% of it's possibilities.
I've started using reason not so long ago, and I know 36% smile.gif

I'm super awesomely late. Fruity Loops is generally considered good, it probably depends on the kind of tool you're looking for. I personally love Adobe Audition as I can record in its Multitrack, loop certain things, set them to a tempo I can change later, etc. It's a steep learning curve in some areas though, and we're probably talking slightly different avenues of music creation. Don't know of any others sad.gif

If you wanna go from scratch, and you wanna make electro based music... either FL studio (fruity loops) or reason.

Now, in FL studio it is a bit faster to put your ideas into realization. Reason needs a bit of work, but may be more rewarding (it has more samples and drum loops etc.). FL studio supports plug-ins, which may be very usefull, and I think Reason does not... yeah...

Adobe audition is also great. I use it to 'computerize' vocals tongue.gif

I've recently got my hands on Reason, it's a very powerful tool and it's gonna take me an age to get partially aquanted to it. But first it's gonna be a good idea to purchase a MIDI keyboard... which completly slipped my mind lol...

I've been playing about with the drum machines on it, pretty cool.

Ahh... cool. biggrin.gif

I've always been interested in this stuff, but it seems too difficult. Especially, Reason. I'm probably just a clutz. Although, when I needed some quick drums, I did manage to get Fruity Loops working. I think (not too sure) there may be a program to turn your computer keyboard into a midi keyboard. You can try googling for one.

I use FL Studio 6, Hammerhead (Virtual drum machine) & TS404 - Though not the plugin. It's all good.

FruityLoops is not bad, I got version 5, also Cubase SX, though that's not easy at all to use...or you can work with more simple programs, like CoolEdit..you know, there are so many...in my case I use Goldwave several times, but gonna get more a more...
