Hey everyone.

People seem so dispondant right now, I wanted to share an idea that's been going round in my head for months to try and cheer everyone up a bit.

I studied film at university and at the moment am finishing work on my first feature, a low-budget comedy set in the 1980's. I'm part of a group of artists in Edinburgh who make shorts for the festival and... well just for kicks really! Over the last year and a half we've been getting more serious and this new film we hope, will attract some kind of attention (note how abstract I am with the term 'attention').

With this in mind we're applying for a grant from the Scottish Arts Council for a future project and I've put forward a reasonable suggestion to the group of a documentary about Jas and his music, his rise and fall and the media storm he went through during the Spaceman era (it's never been done). A kind of 'Poor boy from Wolverhamton makes good' vibe.

Even if we don't get any money, and are laughed off and humilianted, I intend to write to Jas asking if he'd be interested in taking part. Basically I'd travel with a camera to wherever he is and interview him, try to get in touch with the other band members and The Sandkings and see what I can do. It's all super-vague I know, but although I'm not about much on the board I am a huge BZ and SK fan, to the point of obsession, so this is something I think I need to do. I've got the means (cameras, lights microphones and editing gear) and the motivation after all.

This idea begs the question: What would you actually do with a Jas Mann documentary? My answer? God knows! Show it at art galleries, offer it to VH1 or Ch4?

I'm also aware that people have been trying to get in touch with Mr. Mann with little success, I'm just hoping that an official looking letter from a film company would get forwarded to him.

Anyways, let me know what you think...

Futures.
Simon.

Good luck with it! Although if you do get the go ahead... I have a feeling you're gonna have a real problem getting in touch with the ever reclusive Jas!

Well if you need some filler you could always interview some of the fans! (I'm not the man for the job as I usually can't string a simple sentance together! hehe)

Hey Rob, thanks for replying. I was going to suggest getting questions from the fans and maybe interviewing some too. Especially anyone who saw Jas play live!

I dont know about anyone wanting to show the documentary on TV but I'm sure C4 and VH1 would be interested in buying the interview material. I think it'd be a good idea, even to a small audience. The people of Wolverhampton would like it. A local lad who became a huge hit once upon a time, then vanished for good. I doubt you'd get to interview him though. I dont think hes really interested in being out there anymore. What you could do is use all that excellent footage from Accadia to put together something, as well as visiting Wolverhampton to film the places where Jas grew up and maybe even try and get in touch with any of his teachers and people who were involved with him in his early days.

A documentary about Babylon Zoo is a good idea. It could be like VH1's Behind The Music!

Like Rydo says, you could visit Wolverhampton and go to his high school and the art college he went to near Birmingham.

If the documentary is made you could always put it online and go from there.

u want to interview fans AND celebraties.... maybe people from live and kicking people tht have met him and can say stuff he did, negative and posertive views but the celeb thing is so much more important than fans for recognition.... yer the fans would mean a lot to us but a random going on about jas wont be able to pull off the stories or get the attention of a wide audience like a celeb would

Yup, I'd thought about visiting where he grew up and filming some locations associated with him. Hadn't thought about teachers, that's a good idea!
To pull it off i'd really need to actually interview Jas in person I think, even it was just a little interview at the end where he summed up how he felt about it all.

Accadia has interview footage? If they were willing to share that would be awesome!

That's for everyones views. I'll keep posting as I go along, let you know if I get anywhere.

Got them a few weeks back. Really interesting stuff and lots that could be used. The quality varies but adds to the weird feeling of nostalgia in watching them.

Work will most likely start towards the end of the summer, but i've written to Jas about it and am awaiting a response! Keep updated by checking our myspace. It's really crap but our website is down, or rather is under construction. It's 'eXtreme films' on myspace. There won't be any mention of Jas yet mind... and don't be put off by the picture please!
