I was in York over the weekend there and picked up a book called the 1000 UK number 1's. I flicked to 1996 and had a read at what they had to say about Spaceman. I cant remember the exact quotes from Jas but ill write what I remember.
Basically they asked him his thoughts on it and he said it peaked far too soon. When it hit number 1 and stuck there for 5 weeks he knew it was big trouble for him. He was then sent around the world by EMI to promote it and spent 4 weeks unwell through exhaustion. In a way it seemed like he was happy to end it all in December.
It then added that he hid away for 3 years, returning in 1999 with King Kong Groover and its debut single, All The Money's Gone. It didn't even reach the top 40, and not only was all the money gone, but also his career.
He then commented, "I get people coming up to me asking me to go out and create a new Spaceman song, but there is no point."
Jas now lives in America with his wife and kids.
The quotes and all that are very dated I'd say, I think it said the quote was from 2001.
I'm not surprised to have read his comments really. I think its fair to say that he doesnt really care much for creating music anymore. The worst thing he could have done was sell his song to Levis. Well, not the worst thing cos I'm sure its made him a rich man, but in terms of a career in music. He'll forever go down as one of the biggest 1 hit wonders in history, which is sad really, because he made some excellent music in his 2 albums. But as for a 3rd album? No chance. He was right, there is no point. It will sound different from Babylon Zoo. If he wants to make new music, do so as another name, because no one will ever take Babylon Zoo seriously again.
I didn't know he had a wife and kids though.
All that's taken from a piece in Q magazine from a couple of years ago. And I asked Jas about it and he said not all of it is true, like him having a wife for example.
