I did review it for a local radio at the time ! I was 17 then. I still love this album to this day.

I personally think its one of the greatest and really manages to stand on its own without having to be compared to any artist like David Bowie.

The 'Big Three' songs ie Animal Army, Space Man and The Boy With The X-Ray eyes are far from the best tracks.

I'd put Fire Guided Light, Caffeine, and Confused Art ahead of all of them and of course as you've rightly mentioned, Is Your Soul For Sale.

I think the album was too far ahead of its time. Released in this day and age with bands like Muse and The Killers storming the charts and the subsequent death of the 'girl power' movement, The Boy With The X-Ray eyes would fare much better.

I agree Mikkaelson, and what I've always said from the start (along with a lot of the reviewers of BZ at the time). That the music was 'of the future' which would be today. It is still brill, and I have it playing at least once during the week.

I can't say that I agree with the grading, and actually by only reading your review I would have thought that the CD was to get a slightly higher grade by you... =)

Well, without reviewing the CD I can at least say that one of the things I would point out in a review is the major difference in the overall mood the two albums between. The first album were really gloomy, filled with lack of faith in the world, hope for a better tomorrow and a rather HEAVY sound throughout. The second album is way much more happy, and not gloomy at all... glam rock and popish sounding. Also I can't come to think of one single song reaching the excellence in lyrics like the ones that could be found on the first album, like:

They would prefer it if you lived off drugs
It's not a curable disease
Your sexuality confounded their world
Take off you Asian tag and hit the road

Not that I dislike King Kong Groover. I think it is a really nice album and I listen to it from time to time and I have still not, since the release, become tired of it. But, it doesn't affect me at all like The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes does... there I find depth, darkness and many other things which makes it one album that I keep coming back to. I'd without doubt put it on my Top 10 list covering the ten best albums I've ever had the chance to listen to.
