According to Jas in a Smash Hits interview, Caffeine is "about people confused about their sexuality, being shunned. As someone heterosexual, I don't fully understand it, but I respect it. Being gay is part of our culture."

Fine, now I know a little more about this song. But what I don't really
understand is the meaning of the word "caffeine" in this song. It is repeated several
times, even spelled letter by letter. I' m not gay anyway, but I'm curious to know
what caffeine has to do with homosexuality or anything else. I'm also curious because
of the effect of caffeine in my life.
I'm not native English speaker so maybe I'm missing something...?

Yeah, pretty sure it's classed as a drug, same as alcohol and nicotine.
Technically it's an alkaloid.

Check out the current issue of Reader's Digest; there's an article on caffeine in it. A 49g bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk contains 8mg of caffeine, tea 40mg, 500ml Coke 50mg, Red Bull 80mg, Relentless 160mg and Cocaine, the energy drink, has a massive 280mg.

As to why the BZ song is called 'Caffeine', maybe some people who are shunned for whatever reason, be it their sexuality, skin colour etc, turn to drugs (eg caffeine) as a pick-me-up, to make themselves feel better.

The thing I keep thinking of when I read this thread is from George Dawes lesbian song on shooting Stars:

"some drink coffee, some drink tea, a handy metaphor for sexuality".

Now you guys are getting to the point I was wondering.
Caffeine and Sex.
Se the article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4628070.stm

Now I was surprised when I googled (using Brazil's Google; www.google.com.br) the
sentence: "caffeine and sexuality". The first occurence (the "I'm Feeling Lucky" thing)
is BZ !

The song is mainly concerned with the pigeonholing of people and is speaking out against that so I would have thought that coffee is being used as a metaphor for how you deal with people. ie differentiating between black and white coffee as you would between people of different races, and then the same metaphor would apply for the references to sexuality.

Or is that a too sensible post? biggrin.gif
